CLHS Committees

Awards Committee
The Awards Committee oversees the Educator of the Year awards program. Committee members develop the application procedure and scoring rubric, encourage regional schools to nominate candidates, score the candidates, and host an awards dinner event for up to 10 regional finalists, one of which is selected to be the region's Educator of the Year. That person attends the statewide Annual Conference as a regional Educator of the Year. One winner is then selected to be Educator of the Year representing all of California.

Higher Education Committee
Higher Education Committee members act as liaisons to Institutes of Higher Education, helping develop and support effective and equitable procedures for teacher education, credentialing, retention, certification and earning of advanced degrees. The committee also emphasizes student teacher and new teacher support through Job Fairs, interaction with BTSA coordinators, and discounted student teacher rates for League membership and functions.

Instructional Practices Committee
The Instructional Practices Committee seeks to identify and showcase instructional programs that show effective results in student learning. The committee's goal is to act as a resource for the sharing of best practices within the membership and the larger education community. Educators of the Year and other experienced classroom, site and district educators are identified and called upon to share their knowledge through articles and professional development sessions.

Legislative Committee
The Legislative Committee acts a strong voice for League membership, helping to ensure awareness of the organization among state legislators as a prominent professional organization made up of leaders in the education field. Committee members meet with state legislators to provide input on legislation and policy that will affect California schools, arrange legislator visits to schools, work with the League's legislative analyst to provide Legislative Update e-mails through League Links, and participate in Education Challenge Coalition activities.

Membership Committee
The Membership Committee promotes League membership through regional membership campaigns. Members communicate the value of membership in a professional organization by emphasizing benefits such as reduced rates at some of the most respected professional development conferences in the state; receiving regular, grade-level education and legislation news and best instructional practices; networking with other educators; and being part of an organization that represents educators at the state and national levels.

Program Committee
The Program Committee promotes League events and activities, encourages members and non- members to participate in League professional development conferences, and ensures the high quality and relevance of professional development sessions by recruiting presenters with targeted expertise and reviewing session evaluations. Members take an active role in hosting events by registering participants, giving orientation workshops, and providing general assistance to conference participants.

Public Relations Committee
The Public Relations Committee communicates information about the purpose, mission, goals and activities of the League to members, the education community, the media and other stakeholders. Committee members publicize League activities, professional development conferences, and recognition programs such as the Educator of the Year and Legislator of the Year. Members also assist in the dissemination of communications materials to regional panels and schools.

Publication Committee
The Publications Committee serves as a grassroots voice for the philosophy, program and instructional direction of the League by helping defining the organization's editorial goals. The committee ensures the participation of all regions in League publications by soliciting and producing a broad base of articles. Committee members encourage regional member schools to join the League Links electronic network, which provides timely updates on education news, legislation and policy, and instructional practices through regular e-mails.

Sponsorship Committee
Sponsorship Committee members encourage and secure sponsorship for regional League events by developing partnerships with area businesses. The primary goal of the Sponsorship Committee is to fund regional Educator of the Year awards ceremonies, which play an important role in raising the profile of local educators, generating "feel good" education news at the regional level, and inspiring other educators through public recognition of the immense benefits educators provide to students and the community.

Technology Committee
The Technology Committee supports student achievement and the advancement of education through technology as an integrated instructional tool. Committee members play a significant role in shaping the annual Technology Conference through updating presentation application guidelines to reflect current technology needs and strategies; securing PC and Mac lab presenters; recruiting education technology companies; and presenting, monitoring and evaluating professional development sessions at the conferences.
