Legislation
From No Child Left Behind to the high school exit exam, federal and state education legislation is fundamentally changing how California’s public schools operate. More than ever, educators can benefit from understanding how current legislation and policies affect their professional lives.
CLHS is committed to raising the legislative awareness of its members through several programs:
Legislative Analyst
CLHS retains a Sacramento-based legislative analyst to evaluate complex state education bills, brief the board on important legislation, recommend support for pro-middle school legislation, and provide legislative updates for our members.
Legislative Updates
Legislative Updates are e-mailed to CLHS members when crucial education-related legislative events occur. Updates are usually sent within 48 to 72 hours. If you’re a member and you would like to receive legislative updates in your e-mail inbox visit League Links.
By signing up for League Links, you’ll get the CLHS eNewsletter and regular Legislative Updates. CLHS never spams -- you can opt out at any time.
CLHS Legislator of the Year Award
Each school year, one deserving legislator is selected by the CLHS Legislative Committee to receive the CLHS Legislator of the Year award. The recipient often has authored legislation benefiting middle level students and demonstrated consistent support for middle level education.
CLHS Legislative Committee
CLHS sponsors an all-volunteer Legislative Committee that is made up of educators representing each region of the state, and sends the committee to Sacramento for the annual Legislative Day. On this day, the representative educators meet with state legislators who serve on education committees to review pending legislation, discuss educational priorities, and present one deserving legislator with the CLHS Legislator of the Year award.
